What is ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a form of tourism that focuses on being sustainable and environmentally friendly and is also wholesome fun for the traveler. This can mean anything from doing volunteer work in the community you’re staying in to exploring famous national parks of the world. As the name suggests, it’s about enjoying and being respectful of the local area you’re visiting and being good to the people that live there.

3 Factors that make up ecotourism

Conservation

Conservation refers to long-term economic incentives that encourage people to protect a certain area with their own hard work and might. A nature reserve is a perfect example of conservation because visitors to the park may enjoy hiking trips, bird-watching or similar activities. These people will pay money for the experience and this money can end up saving a place that might otherwise have been destroyed under construction or commercial development.

Communities

Local communities enrichment: empowerment of locals by providing employment, education and economic development through tourism opportunities.

Interpretation

Ecotourism is based on learning by experience. It’s an awareness of the essential value of natural resources and environmental protection through active participation in a planned itinerary. As opposed to regular tourism, it also encompasses greater opportunities for visitors to learn about local cultures, heritage, flora & fauna as well as enjoy activities such as camping and trekking.

Ecotourism Activity Examples

There are plenty of activities that are considered eco and combine nature and adventure together. If you are looking for a great experience then try some of the following activities:

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

This is a great way to explore waterways and get up close with nature without the noise pollution of petrol motor boats. This activity involves standing on a large board similar to a surfboard and using a paddle to navigate yourself around. It is actually quite tricky at first, but once you have your sense of balance you will be off and paddling!

Bush Tucker Guided Tours

Take a step back in time and experience a guided tour of Australia from a first nations guide and learn all about the different food that can be sourced from the bush.
